Basilica of St. Anthony
Istanbul

Basilica of St. Anthony

The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua (known locally as Sent Antuan Bazilikası) on İstiklal Avenue is the largest and most active Roman Catholic church in Istanbul. Originally built in 1725, the current striking Venetian Neo-Gothic building was completed in 1912 by architects Giulio Mongeri and Edoardo de Nari

Original Structure: The first church was constructed for the local Italian Catholic community of Istanbul in 1725.
Reconstruction: The original church was demolished in the early 20th century to make way for urban development. The current red-brick structure was built between 1906 and 1912.
Architectural Style: Designed in the Venetian Neo-Gothic style, the church features a Latin-cross layout and a Romanesque crypt.
"The Turkish Pope": Future Pope John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) served as the Vatican's ambassador to Turkey and preached at St. Anthony’s for 10 years (1935–1944). He learned to speak fluent Turkish during his time in Istanbul.
Elevated to Basilica: In 1932, Pope Pius XI elevated the church to the status of a minor basilica.
