Discover the majestic Beyazıt Mosque in Istanbul
The Beyazıt Mosque was built by Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II. Construction began in 1501 and was completed in 1506. It is one of the oldest imperial mosques in Istanbul.
Location:Located in the historic Beyazıt Square in Istanbul's Fatih district, Beyazıt Mosque stands directly opposite the main gate of Istanbul University.
Significance:It is one of the oldest large Ottoman imperial mosques in Istanbul. It represents the transition period to classical Ottoman mosque architecture. It pioneered the large mosques built later. In particular, the central large dome system was developed in later works. Therefore, it is considered important in architectural history. It is built at a very important point. Beyazıt Square was one of the centers of trade, education, and state life during the Ottoman period.
Architecture:A large central dome sits atop the main prayer area. The dome has a diameter of approximately 16–17 meters. The large dome is supported by semi-domes. It has two minarets. It has a large inner courtyard; the courtyard features arcaded columns. Cut stone and brick are used together. The interior features Ottoman calligraphy and decorations.
