Gulhane Park
Gülhane Park is the oldest public park in Istanbul, once serving as the private outer garden of Topkapı Palace. It gets its name meaning "House of Roses" from the historic rose gardens cultivated there during the Ottoman era.
Imperial Era: For centuries, it was exclusively used by the Ottoman sultans and court.
The Tanzimat Edict (1839): The park was the historical stage where the Tanzimat Edict was publicly proclaimed. This landmark decree launched a major modernization period, guaranteeing civil rights and equality to all Ottoman citizens.
Opening to the Public (1912): The sprawling grounds were finally opened as a public municipal park.
Republican Era: In 1926, the first statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk erected in Turkey was placed in the park.
