Istanbul Greek Orthodox Patriarchate
The Istanbul Greek Orthodox Patriarchate (Fener Greek Patriarchate) is a long-established institution located in the Fener district of Istanbul, serving as the spiritual center of the Greek Orthodox world and the "first" (ecumenical) seat of the Eastern Orthodox Churches for over 1600 years. Inheriting its legacy from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottoman State and the present-day Republic of Turkey, this institution is considered the "Vatican" of the Orthodox world.
Origin:With Constantinople (Istanbul) becoming the capital in the 4th century, the Patriarchate historically became the second most important center after Rome.
Headquarters: Until the conquest of Istanbul, the Patriarchate building was located near Hagia Sophia.
Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror's Edict: After the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror issued an edict regulating the religious and legal affairs of the Greek community. According to this edict, the election of patriarchs and the activities of the patriarchate continued.
Center Changes: Following the construction of the Church of the Apostles (on the site of today's Fatih Mosque), the patriarchate moved successively to the Pammakaristos Monastery (until 1587), then to Ayvansaray, and finally to its current location, the Church of St. George in Fener, in 1602.
Treaty of Lausanne: At the 1923 Lausanne Peace Conference, the Patriarchate was permitted to remain within the borders of Türkiye, but only on the condition that it dealt solely with religious matters.
Current Status: Today, the patriarchate is known as the Phanar Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, and Bartholomew I (Dimitris Arhondonis) has served as the Patriarch and Archbishop of Istanbul Orthodox Patriarchate since 1991.
