Molla Zeyrek Mosque (Pantokrator Monastery)
Istanbul

Molla Zeyrek Mosque (Pantokrator Monastery)

The Molla Zeyrek Mosque, formerly the Byzantine-era Pantokrator Monastery (built 1124–1136), is a significant historic structure in Istanbul’s Fatih district. As the second largest surviving Byzantine religious building after Hagia Sophia, it features three churches merged into one, displaying both Byzantine, mosaics, and Ottoman repairs.

Original Purpose: Commissioned by Empress Irene and completed by her husband, Emperor John II Komnenos, it served as a major monastery, imperial cemetery, and hospital, where the first known eye surgery was reportedly performed.
Conversion to Mosque: After the 1453 conquest, it was converted into a madrasa and mosque by Sultan Mehmed II, named after the scholar Molla Zeyrek Mehmet Efendi.
Architecture: It represents Middle Byzantine architecture, combining three distinct churches. It features rich opus sectile marble flooring and, after a 1766 earthquake, includes Ottoman baroque details.
Restoration and Status: Located in the Zeyrek neighborhood overlooking the Golden Horn, it underwent a major restoration completed in 2018 and is currently open for worship.

This UNESCO World Heritage-listed site offers a unique look at the transition from Byzantine to Ottoman, reflecting the cultural layers of Istanbul.
