Yedikule Dungeons and Fortress of the Seven Towers in Istanbul
Yedikule Fortress (Fortress of the Seven Towers)
Located in the Fatih district of Istanbul, the Yedikule Fortress is a historical structure that blends Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman heritage. Built in 1458 by Sultan Mehmed II shortly after the conquest of Constantinople, it was created by adding three new towers to four pre-existing, massive towers of the Theodosian Walls, including the famous Golden Gate (Porta Aurea).
The Golden Gate: The southern part of the fortress incorporates the 5th-century Byzantine Golden Gate, which was once the ceremonial entrance used by emperors entering the city.
Ottoman Era Use: During the Ottoman period, the fortress functioned as a state prison, a treasury, and an archive.
The Dungeons: It is famously known as the Yedikule Dungeons (Yedikule Zindanları) because many notable figures, including foreign ambassadors and political prisoners, were imprisoned there.
